Now’s a good time for maintenance on home heating systems Print E-mail

Chimney SweepNobody likes having to pay the cost of home heating bills, of course, but they’re a necessity in order to provide a livable climate in houses and other buildings during the colder months of the year. But there’s another problem associated with home heating systems that occasionally rears its head, much to the consternation of those where it manifests itself.

During the colder months, fires are more likely to break out in structures, particularly in residential buildings. That’s because heating systems sometimes malfunction and set fire to a portion of the structure. Most often, the place where a fire breaks out is in the chimney, due to the fact that’s where the greatest amount of heat is often concentrated.

As a result, chimney fires usually break out during the winter months. If a homeowner is lucky, emergency responders can extinguish the blaze before too much damage is done to the rest of the building. But sometimes, the fire spreads into the rest of the structure, destroying the house in the process.

Inspecting Your Chimney and Its Liners Print E-mail

Relining with Stainless SteelIf you have a chimney, when was the last time you replaced your liner? If that question stumps you, then it might be time to investigate the situation a little and probably even consider having your chimney inspected. You may be due for a new liner.

Although chimneys are designed to withstand nearly anything, it would seem, the truth is they aren't quite as indestructible as we might think they are. The liners in particular could easily lose their former stability and be a factor in a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning by permitting the escape of gases and/or burning embers.

If you do, indeed, find that you need to have new liners installed, there are a number of different options open to you. The fireplaces of today are not the fireplaces of old times which is a good thing for homeowners. The fireplaces of today are not necessarily simply made of brick. Many are made of a variety of more supple materials. This allows you to replace the liners without essentially rebuilding the entire chimney.
